Job Description

Role Overview
The SALT Specialist is responsible for managing state and local tax compliance, developing strategies to minimize tax liabilities, and addressing complex tax issues such as nexus, apportionment, and tax credits. This role requires a deep understanding of multi-state tax laws and regulations, as well as the ability to assist with audits and filings across multiple jurisdictions.

Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance and Reporting

    • Prepare and review state and local tax returns, including income, sales and use, property, franchise, and excise taxes.
    • Ensure accurate and timely filings across multiple jurisdictions, adhering to varying state and local regulations.
    • Monitor legislative changes and regulatory updates, assessing their impact on compliance processes.
  • Nexus and Apportionment Analysis

    • Analyze nexus implications for businesses operating in multiple states to determine tax filing obligations.
    • Conduct apportionment studies to accurately allocate income and expenses across states.
    • Provide guidance on state-specific apportionment methodologies and sourcing rules.
  • Tax Planning and Strategy

    • Identify opportunities for tax savings through credits, incentives, and exemptions.
    • Advise on state and local tax implications for business operations, mergers, acquisitions, and expansions.
    • Assist with structuring transactions to achieve optimal tax outcomes while ensuring compliance.
  • Audit and Controversy Support

    • Manage state and local tax audits, acting as the primary point of contact with taxing authorities.
    • Prepare and present supporting documentation for audit defense, resolving issues efficiently.
    • Negotiate settlements and agreements with state and local tax agencies.
  • Technical Research and Advisory

    • Conduct in-depth research on complex state and local tax issues, including legislative developments and case law.
    • Draft technical memoranda, whitepapers, and advisory opinions to provide clarity on tax positions.
    • Assist clients in addressing emerging tax challenges such as digital goods taxation and marketplace facilitator rules.
  • Technology and Process Improvement

    • Leverage tax software and automation tools for compliance, data analysis, and reporting.
    • Implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and reduce compliance risks.
    • Maintain and update tax databases and documentation for multi-state filings.

Qualifications

  • Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or related field.
    • CPA, JD, or MST preferred.
  • Experience

    • 3+ years of experience in state and local tax compliance, planning, and controversy.
    • Experience with multi-state tax laws, regulations, and reporting requirements.
    • Proven track record of managing audits and resolving state and local tax disputes.
  • Technical Skills

    • Proficiency in tax software such as Vertex, Avalara, ONESOURCE, or similar platforms.
    • Advanced skills in Excel and data analysis tools for handling large datasets.
    • Strong understanding of tax accounting principles, nexus standards, and apportionment methodologies.

Desired Skills

  • Familiarity with SALT-specific regulations like Wayfair nexus, Public Law 86-272, and marketplace facilitator laws.
  • Knowledge of industry-specific tax issues (e.g., manufacturing, retail, e-commerce).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple state-level compliance requirements simultaneously.
